Produced over a two year period, The Flow Project is a photographic project focusing on light, water, movement and time.  I use a large number of floating lights and photography to capture and chart the currents of different bodies of water. There is a particular synergy between light and water that has always interested me and has become quite central to my work. They both behave in a similar fashion and co-exist with an attractive harmony. Both seek to fill their container, though only water is governed by the effects of gravity (in any noticeable way). This synergy forms the starting point of each installment of the project, with the final image a result of long-exposure photography.

The project was originally inspired by a photograph of a car-park covered in snow, where the tyre-tracks of each car that had come and gone are visible, creating a narrative frozen in time. The camera compresses time into a single image and allows us to de-compress the image in our minds when viewing it, and re-construct the narrative. And so the collaboration between my input, and the flow of a natural water body creates an image that tells the story of the water.

A river on the south coast of Victoria, fed by a waterfall – it cuts its way through a flood way before heading to the nearby beach.
